How to Fix a Burn Ring on a Countertop

Whether caused by a hot pan in the kitchen or a hairstyling product in the bathroom, burn rings on a countertop are a real eyesore. If you burn the countertop, you can remove burn marks and discoloration yourself without the need for expensive repair bills or countertop replacements. For the most part, you can remove burn marks from counters whether they are made of laminate or made of a solid material such as marble, granite or similar, though methods may differ.

Things You'll Need

  • Sponge
  • Dish detergent
  • White toothpaste
  • Old toothbrush
  • Countertop cleaner
  • Soft towel
  • Abrasive cleanser

Instructions

  1. Laminate-Style Surface

    • 1

      Scrub the area with a sponge soaked in warm, soapy water to remove any loose residue from the burn.

      Apply a quarter-sized drop of white toothpaste to the burn and scrub with a soft brush or an old toothbrush.

      Apply additional toothpaste if necessary and continue to scrub until the burn mark disappears.

      Wash the surface with your cleaner of choice. Dry it thoroughly with a clean towel.

    Solid Surface

      Scrub the countertop with a sponge and your cleaner of choice, based on the countertop material. Follow the directions on the package to clean loose residue from the area.

      Apply a quarter-sized drop of an abrasive cleaner. Scrub the area with a sponge or soft cloth. Reapply the abrasive cleanser if necessary.

      Remove the abrasive cleanser from the countertop with your cleaner of choice. Follow the package directions to avoid damage.
