DIY Restaining Leather Furniture

Restaining leather furniture can be done at home for a fraction of the cost of a professional recoloring. Restaining can be done every few years to combat the signs of normal wear and tear, or as part of a redecorating plan that involves making your leather furniture several shades darker. Whatever your reason for restaining the leather furniture in your home, the process involves a number of leather care products that clean, recolor and finish the material of your furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Thoroughly scrub down your leather furniture with leather cleaning spray, working the product into the material with a bristle brush to remove accumulated filth.

    • 2

Wipe down the entire surface with a dry cloth to remove lingering grime and cleaning product.

    • 3

Spray the leather with a carefully applied mist of the recoloring dye to avoid any runs or puddles.

    • 4

Smooth out the product into a thin, even layer with a sponge. Allow it to dry for 15 minutes or as directed on the label.

    • 5

Add additional layers of the dye until the desired shade is reached, letting each layer dry for 15 minutes before adding more product.

    • 6

Wait several hours for the leather dye to completely set.

    • 7

Apply leather conditioning cream to the surface of the recolored leather to replenish moisture in the leather. This prevents the leather from getting dehydrated, which could cause cracking and tears in the colored leather.
