How to Fix Creaking Wood Chairs

A wooden chair can add a warm, rich tone to your home, but you may not want to sit on it at all if it starts to creak. Creaking occurs when two rigid surfaces rub against each other, and once it starts, it will not stop unless you fix it. If your wooden chair is creaking and making squeaking noises whenever you put some weight on it, take the time to tend to the noises, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful rest in silence.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Sit on the wooden chair carefully and listen for where the creaking comes from.

    • 2

Tighten the screws in that area using a screwdriver. In some cases, a creaking chair is simply due to a single loose screw.

    • 3

Remove any screws that spin in their holes. This means that the screws are stripped and should be replaced. Replace them with screws that are of the same size or slightly larger if the hole has expanded.

    • 4

Test the chair to see the creaking has stopped.

    • 5

Puff some powdered graphite into the joints where the creaking is occurring and rub it into the joints with your fingers. This lubricates the joints and quiets any noise.
