How to Fix a Burnt Countertop With a Tile

Burn marks on laminate and porcelain countertops are difficult to remove. If only the surface of the material is scorched, it may come clean with a paste of baking soda and water, applied in firm circular motions with a toothbrush. When all else fails, a clever way to disguise the burn is to adhere a tile to the countertop to serve as a trivet. Not only is this an attractive addition to your kitchen, but it's also a good way to ensure you don't burn the countertop again — just be sure to place all hot pans on your trivet rather than the countertop.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the tile over the burn mark and position it to your satisfaction. Trace lightly around the tile with a pencil, then set the tile aside.

    • 2

Apply the tile adhesive to the area inside the pencil lines using the notched trowel. Spread the adhesive so the notches of the trowel scrape the counter surface and create hills and valleys of adhesive.

    • 3

Set the tile in place. Press down on the tile and level it.

    • 4

Remove excess adhesive from the countertop around the tile with a damp rag.

    • 5

Allow the adhesive to cure for 24 hours. Keep the area clean and dry during this time.

    • 6

Apply silicone caulk to the edges of the tile to completely seal it to the countertop. Cut the spout of the silicon tube at an angle with sharp kitchen scissors. Place the spout at an angle against the edge of the tile and gently squeeze the tube and move it along the tile. Use your finger to evenly smooth the silicon into a concave seal between the tile edge and the countertop.
