These activities can leave the kitchen sink surface with stubborn stains and unsightly pits. Porcelain in particular, though a tough material, can develop ugly surface problems. Instructions

    • 1

Clean the sink surface thoroughly with a mild detergent and water to remove surface dirt and grease. Mix two tablespoons of degreasing dish detergent to one gallon of hot water and scrub the kitchen sink surface with a sponge or soft cloth.

    • 2

Remove surface stains with a paste of ¼ cup of baking soda and ¼ cup of ammonia. The baking soda acts as a mild abrasive to lift off surface stains. Scrub the area vigorously until the stain is no longer visible.

    • 3

Apply, alternatively, a small amount of chlorine bleach to stubborn stains like coffee, tomato sauce or fruits juices. Allow the bleach to sit on the stain for 15 minutes. Rinse with clear water. Do not mix chlorine bleach with ammonia or other cleaners, which can produce toxic fumes.

    • 4

Sand visible pits with 220-grit sandpaper, being careful not to scratch undamaged areas around the pit, according to the ProHandyman website. Remove the grit from the area with soap and water.

    • 5

Fill in small pits in the porcelain surface with a filler kit available at home improvement and hardware stores. Allow the filler material according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

    • 6

Sand off any high spots and paint the repaired area with the kit’s glazing material, allowing to dry thoroughly before allowing the sink surface to get wet.
