How to Fix a Hollow Wood Door

Hollow core doors are an inexpensive option for interior doors, but they aren't as sturdy as a solid door. This can lead to cracks, dents or holes if something bumps against the door too hard. Instead of trashing a broken hollow core door, you can repair it. Keep in mind that once the fix is done, you'll have to paint at least one side of the door to hide your patch.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the door down by removing the hinges. Use an appropriate screwdriver. Undo the screws and remove the door.

    • 2

Pare away splintered wood around the hole with a utility knife. The edges of the hole should be clean.

    • 3

Spray expanding foam into the center of the hole. Shake the can vigorously. Hold it upside down to spray.

    • 4

Pare away the excess foam with a utility knife. The surface should be flat.

    • 5

Use a putty knife to cover the patched area with joint compound. Feather your edges out away from the hole. Scrape off any excess with the edge of your knife.

    • 6

Sand over the putty to smooth the surface. Run your hand over the patch, you should not feel any difference between the rest of the door and the patched area.

    • 7

Prime and paint the door with oil-based latex primer. Apply the primer with a roller, and let it dry for four hours. Apply at least one coat of oil-based latex paint with a roller. Rehang the door.
