How to Repair Separating Laminate Cupboards

A common problem many homeowners face with their laminate cupboards is peeling around the edges. Peeling occurs through use or from the cupboard becoming wet. This is a simple repair as long as the cupboard door does not appear damaged. If the door is damaged, it will need to be replaced instead of repaired since the laminate will not have a solid base to adhere to.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Vise
  • Moisture-resistant adhesive
  • 1/2-inch putty knife
  • Painter's tape
  • Sharp chisel

Instructions

    • 1

Back out the screws in the hinges that hold the cupboard door in place. Set the cupboard door in a vise with the damaged area up. Tighten the vise to hold the door in place.

    • 2

Place a small amount of moisture-resistant adhesive on a 1/2-inch putty knife. Apply the adhesive to the cupboard door underneath the separating laminate. Press the laminate into the adhesive. Some adhesive may seep out from underneath the laminate.

    • 3

Wrap a piece of painter's tape over the damaged area and around the cupboard door. Leave the tape in place while the adhesive sets, according to the manufacturer's directions. Peel the tape off the cupboard door once the adhesive has set.

    • 4

Scrape away any excess adhesive with a sharp chisel. Do this as soon as the adhesive has set so it is still slightly soft and easy to remove. Take care not to scratch the cupboard door.

Reinstall the door in the cabinet and screw in the hinges to finish the repair.
