How to Fill in Cracks Between Fireplace Stones & the Fireplace Insert

If you have a noticed a crack between the stones on your fireplace and the protective insert, correct this problem immediately. For the liner to function properly, there should be no space between the stones and the insert. The crack can hold moisture and foster mold and bacteria, which can be dangerous to human health. This project will take just a few hours to complete and does not require any masonry experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Tape down drop cloths around the fireplace to protect your flooring. This material will be very difficult, if not impossible, to remove from most types of flooring if you happen to drop some while you are working.

    • 2

Mix the fireclay, a fire-resistant mortar, in a clean bucket. Follow package instructions for the amount necessary for the job. For only a small area, make a very small amount. For larger areas, you may need the entire container.

    • 3

Trowel the fireclay into the space between the insert and the stones. Work the clay into the space to fill it up. If some slips down while you are working, put it back on the trowel and work it back into the space.

    • 4

Smooth out the edge with the bottom of your trowel. You will need a good clean edge since this patch will be visible. Use the bottom of the trowel to scrape away any excess clay.

    • 5

Let the fireclay cure for at least eight hours before using the fireplace. If you fixed a large crack, it may take longer to fully cure.
