How to Change the Orientation of the Refrigerator Door

With most newer refrigerators, you can change the door orientation. This is perfect for homes that have only a small space to store a refrigerator and limited options as to which way the door can swing. You can find out if your model can be reversed by looking at the opposite side where the hinges are. If you see predrilled holes, you are in luck. If not, you may need to purchase a kit from the manufacturer to change the orientation.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the refrigerator door to expose the hinges. If there is built-up grime, clean this off with a degreasing cleaner so that you have easy access to the screws.

    • 2

Remove all the items stored in the door. Place these aside in a cooler until the project is done.

    • 3

Remove the screws from the top and bottom of the door. Set your cordless screwdriver to reverse and take the screws out. Place them aside in a safe place where they will not roll away.

    • 4

Remove the hinges from the refrigerator frame. Follow the same procedure to take the screws out. Hold on to them.

    • 5

Place the hinges on the opposite side of the door. Center them over the predrilled holes on the frame.

    • 6

Insert the screws through the hinges into the frame. Set your cordless screwdriver back to regular and drive the screws through the hinges.

    • 7

Hold the door into place between the top and bottom hinges. Insert the screws you put aside earlier and tighten until the door is firmly secured.

    • 8

Flip the location of the door handle. Remove the screws from the door handle and move it to the other side over the predrilled holes. Insert the screw, through the handle into the holes and tighten them.
