How to Glaze Slate

Applying a glaze of sealer to a surface protects the surface from various outside threats, such as dust, water, and anything else that may wind up on a wall. If you have a slate surface in your home and want to apply a coat of sealer to it, you can do so by following the proper precautions and using the right household tools.

Instructions

Put on a facemask. The fumes from the sealer can have adverse effects on people, and safety precautions should be taken.

    • 2

Apply a single coat of sealer to the slate surface with a large paintbrush. Depending on which sealer you use, you will have to apply it differently. If you are using a film forming sealer, apply two thin coats, three hours apart. If you are using a penetrating sealer, apply one thick coat. You may not need to apply another coat, but if you do, allow the first coat to dry.

    • 3

Test the glazed coat after allowing it to dry overnight. You can test the coat by sprinkling water on your slate surface. If the water darkens the stone, repeat the procedure. If the water does not darken the stone, the surface is properly coated.
