How to Keep a Backsplash Dry Behind a Kitchen Sink

A backsplash is designed to protect the wall behind a sink from getting wet. If it is not installed properly, it can actually create an even larger problem. Water can become trapped behind this area, causing damage to the drywall. Mold can be an issue if this occurs, as well as the potential for having to do costly repairs. If your backsplash wasn't installed correctly, you can fix this problem to help keep the area dry.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old caulk with a utility knife. All of the old caulk needs to be removed so that the surface is flat and clean.

    • 2

Tape the backsplash and the wall. Leave a quarter inch free between the tape where the caulk will go.

    • 3

Apply caulk with a caulk gun to the open area between the strips of tape. Bead out the caulk slowly and do not over-apply.

    • 4

Smooth out the caulk with the bottom of a spoon or a knife. This will give a professional look to the caulk. You can use a finger, but a spoon will provide a smoother finish.

    • 5

Remove the tape immediately. Leaving the tape on while the caulk dries will cause a permanent bond.
