How to Install Polypropylene Stair Treads to a Hardwood Floor

Hardwood floors can be an attractive part of your home. But if they get wet, they can be dangerous to those with poor balance or weak legs, like the elderly. The addition of stair treads to the floor in spots that may become wet, like near doorways, is a smart safety precaution. Stair treads made from polypropylene are well suited for this application.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the wooden surface where you'll be installing the stair tread with a solution of household cleaner and water. Choose a cleaner that's safe for use on wood. Let the wood dry thoroughly.

    • 2

Measure the width of the area you want covered with treads. Measure and cut the treads to size using a steel straightedge and a utility knife.

    • 3

Apply contact cement, as recommended by the manufacturer, onto the backside of the tread and the surface of the floor. Position the tread onto the wood.

    • 4

Place heavy weights, such as bricks wrapped in a rag, onto the tread while the glue is drying. Don't allow anyone to walk on or otherwise disturb the treads while the adhesive is curing.
