Different Techniques for Bed Tying

For those with an abiding affinity for colonial times, you can build a bed in your home in a colonial manner. Colonial beds did not have a series of box springs to support the body during a night of rest. Instead, the bed was supported by ropes that were tied to the bed frame and the bed posts. While there will be some sagging in the middle, you will have a colonial model bed that makes a statement.

Instructions

    • 1

Bore holes in the rail frames of the bed 6 to 10 inches apart.

    • 2

Tighten the rope. Do this by soaking the rope completely and let it dry 24 to 48 hours. After the rope is completely dry, you can tie your rope bed

    • 3

Feed the rope through the holes at the head of the bed and then make a knot so it cannot be pulled through the hole. Bring the rope down to the foot of the bed. Feed the rope through that hole and then across to the next hole and up to the head of the bed. Do this for the full length of the bed. Pull as tight as possible and secure with a finishing knot.

    • 4

Feed the rope through the side holes of the bed. Tie a firm knot at the start and then feed the rope across the bed. Bring the rope through the equivalent side hole on the opposite side of the bed, then bring the rope down to the next hole. Continue in this manner for the full width of the bed. Pull the rope as tight as possible and secure with a finishing knot.
