Removing Battens From Vinyl Walls

Battens are thin strips installed to cover joint seams in vinyl paneling. Vinyl paneling is commonly used in mobile homes for its light weight and flexibility. However, batten-seamed vinyl panels may also be found in the bathrooms and kitchens of permanent housing. During remodeling, the batten seam strips can be removed to create a smooth wall surface for wall papering or other types of paneling.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the batten from the floor up to the desired height using a measuring tape. Mark the point with a pencil.

    • 2

Hold a torpedo level at the measured reference point and draw a level horizontal line across the batten strip.

    • 3

Cut across the surface of the batten with a utility knife following the horizontal line.

    • 4

Pry the batten out from the vinyl wall seam using a putty knife. Put the putty knife between the batten and the vinyl. Pry only until the inner part of the batten is exposed.

    • 5

Cut the inner part of the batten with the utility knife.

    • 6

Push the remaining end of the batten into the seam.

    • 7

Remove the unwanted batten by pulling it out from the seam slowly and evenly toward you.

    • 8

Repeat the process to remove the remaining batten.
