Reupholstering Vs. Replacing a Couch

If you have an older couch that has seen better days, there are two main options available. You can buy an entirely new couch to replace it, or you can have the old one reupholstered to give it new life. Before you make your decision, carefully consider both options.
  1. The Style of the Couch

    • If you are happy with the way your couch looks in terms of its style and lines, then reupholstering it would be a good option. Keep in mind that old furniture can look very dated, even if it has a new cover. If you want to change the style and theme of your home, keeping an old couch will make it stand out like a sore thumb. In this instance, it is best to go with a replacement couch.

The State of the Cushions and Frame

    • New upholstery fabric won't do much for a couch that is worn and sagging. If the cushions on the couch are still full and do not have any dents, the couch would be a good candidate for reupholstering. If the cushions are sprung, torn or simply very old, however, replacing them along with the material on the couch can get expensive. The frame of the couch should also be considered. If it is broken or the wood has dried out, replacement is the best option.

    DIY or Professional?

    • If you have decided to reupholster your couch, the next step is deciding whether or not to do it yourself, or hire someone to do it. Reupholstering a very simple couch that has clean, straight lines, is not difficult. On the other hand, reupholstering a couch with rounded lines can be tough for a non-professional. Get quotes from local reupholstering companies before you make your final decision. In many cases, you will get what you pay for.

    Comparing the Cost

    • Once you have a quote, or if you have priced the fabric and have decided to do the job yourself, compare the money you will be spending with the cost of a brand new couch. The one exception to this rule would be an antique or heirloom couch that has both real and sentimental value. Reupholstering this type of couch may be expensive, but the cost can be outweighed by the emotional value of the piece. If you have no attachment to the couch and a new one is less expensive, than purchasing a new couch would be the best option.
