Reinforcing Laminate Countertops

Laminate countertops consist of a pressed board slab, onto which plastic laminate sheets are cut, fit and attached. Laminate countertops are installed over the framework of the cabinets below. They rest along the tops of the framework and are fastened in place by screw-mounted angle brackets that connect to the cabinets. When making your own laminate countertops, it is important to reinforce potential problem areas to maintain and strong, solid structure.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the entire front edge of the laminate countertop. Cut a strip of three-quarter-inch medium density fiberboard (MDF) to the same length with a circular saw. The MDF strip should be cut to about 4 inches in width. Line the brace up along the edge of the countertop and check that everything is flush.

    • 2

Drill pilot holes, about two every 12 inches, through the brace and into the countertop below. Apply a generous bead of wood glue to the underside of the MDF strip, and fasten the brace in place with wood screws. The brace serves a dual function by both creating a more finished edge and by supporting any seams along the length of the laminate countertop.

    • 3

Repeat the process on all inside and outside edges around the entire perimeter of the countertop. Once you have reinforced the edges of the counter, add cross supports and sure up any seams which may exist. Measure the distance between the two edge braces wherever a seam exists. Cut MDF braces to fit with a circular saw and mount the braces with wood screws as you did in Step 2.

    • 4

Apply a bead of caulk and then use miter bolts to reinforce the corners of the laminate countertop where the two separate pieces meet. Locate the cutouts straddling each corner seam on the underside of the countertop. Lay one bolt into each cutout, and then turn the countertop over and place it in position on the cabinets. Tighten the miter bolts with the wrench. The bolts will hold the corner joint fast and prevent separation.

Install a strip of hardwood trim to the front edge of the particle board countertop base. Cut a strip of three-quarter-by-one-and-a-half-inch inch hardwood trim to fit the length of the countertop's front edge. Apply a bead of wood glue to one side of the strip and press it into position on the front of the counter. Drive finishing nails every 6 inches along the full length of the strip. Allow the glue to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. This small piece of hardwood trim will make the counter more rigid, protect its front edge and resist wear and dings better than the particle board base beneath it.
