How to Remove Brass Plating From a Claw Foot Tub

Antique claw foot tubs are made out of cast iron and some models may have brass-plated feet. If you are restoring an old tub and would like to change the look of the feet, the brass plating can be removed. Rarely would an entire tub be plated in brass, but if you do happen to have an old tub with this type of plating, it can be removed as well, but the project will take much longer.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Apply acetone to the brass plating with a cotton pad. This will remove the lacquer finish that is typically found on top of brass plating to keep it from tarnishing. Pour the acetone onto the cotton pad to soak it. Wear gloves to protect your skin. Rub the cotton pad over the brass plating. Dry it off with a soft cloth.

    • 2

Buff the brass plating off with a rotary tool with a buffer attachment. Start with one leg of the tub or in one area if doing the entire tub. Put safety glasses on to protect your eyes. Turn the rotary tool on and begin the buffing process. Remove all the brass in one area, then move to the next spot.

Touch up any missed spots. Brass plating can be stubborn. Inspect the feet or the body of the tub. If you notice any spots that still have a small amount of brass on them, buff these areas clean.

Spray paint the legs or the exterior of the tub. Once the brass is removed, you can restore the tub to its former white color with spray paint intended for use on metal. Place newspapers around the feet of the tub to protect your flooring. Spray a thin coating of paint onto the feet or the tub. Let it cure for at least four to six hours. Apply a second coat if necessary.
