How to Drill a Shower

If you need to drill in your ceramic tile shower, whether to add a soap dish or install a towel bar, it is possible but keep in mind that you run the risk of splitting the tile and having to replace the entire tile section. Drill carefully and slowly to help ensure the tile is not destroyed through your handiwork.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place a piece of duct tape over the tile section you want to drill.

    • 2

Measure the distance between the two holes you want to drill. Make a mark on the duct tape to indicate where you will drill the holes.

    • 3

Equip a handheld drill with a carbide or diamond-tipped drill bit. Drill the holes at a right angle. Set the drill speed at 100 to 200 rpm then press the drill tip into the tile lightly. Occasionally spray the bit with water to keep it cool.
