How to Cut Carpeting for a Turnout Stair

A stair turnout is a decorative piece at the bottom of a staircase that often makes the final stair wider than the rest of the stairs. When cutting the carpet for a turnout, it is important to know if you want to use a waterfall method of carpeting, where one piece of carpet covers all of the treads and risers, or a cap and band method, where individual pieces cover each step and riser pair separately. For staircases with a turnout, a cap and band method is the most effective.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the turnout.

    • 2

Add this measurement to the measurement for the rest of the stair and riser.

    • 3

Lay a piece of carpet over the turnout stair that is wider than the stair.

    • 4

Cut the carpet with a sharp utility knife or carpet knife so that the pieces are the exact length of the riser, tread and the nosing. For a width measurement, add about 1 inch to the measurement so that you can fold under the side or wrap the carpet around the turnout.

    • 5

Staple, tack or glue the carpet in place, and trim any excess to conform to the turnout.
