How to Frame a Corner Stud Wall

When framing a wall corner during whole house construction or home remodeling, the two most important factors to consider are structural strength and a suitable nailing surface for the interior wall sheathing. The corner studs of a wall may consist of three full-length studs fastened together, or they may instead be two studs with shorter blocks between them, creating a beam of the same volume but not the same structural rigidity. You can assemble and frame a corner stud wall with a few tools and basic carpentry skills.

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • T-square

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a 2-by-4 stud across two sawhorses and measure out the required wall stud length using a measuring tape. Mark a reference point on the stud at the desired length.

    • 2

Scribe a line across the 2-by-4’s surface using a T-square and the pencil. Place the T-square precisely at the marked reference point to ensure an accurate line is drawn.

    • 3

Cut the 2-by-4 along the pencil line with a wood-cutting saw.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 1, 2 and 3 on the remaining 2-by-4s.

    • 5

Align all three 2-by-4s together and secure them using a C-clamp at each end.

    • 6

Fasten the corner studs together by driving 16d nails at approximately 12- to 16-inch intervals on each side.

    • 7

Put the assembled corner studs into position.

    • 8

Check the corner stud’s 90 degree alignment on each side using a level. Place the level vertically along the stud surface. A helper may be of assistance supporting the stud assembly.

    • 9

Secure the corner stud by driving nails diagonally through the stud into the upper and lower sill plate. Be sure the stud maintains a 90 degree alignment.
