How to Install Flex Rock Countertops

FlexRock is a textured rock coating that you can apply to a laminate counter top or wood surface for a ceramic tile or cut stone appearance in your kitchen or bathroom. This cement-like substance comes in a kit that includes the tools and supplies you need for application, including the tinting colors to create the color textures you desire. The durable FlexRock surface repels water and does not discolor from use.

Instructions

    • 1

Scuff the surface of the wood or laminate with 40-grit sandpaper to help the FlexRock adhere properly. Wipe the surface with a damp rag to remove all dirt and dust and let it dry completely before applying FlexRock.

    • 2

Caulk all seams on the wood or laminate surface with a paintable exterior acrylic caulk to prevent separation after installation. Push the caulk into the cracks with a putty knife. Smooth the surface and remove excess caulk by running the putty knife over the seam.

    • 3

Paint the caulked seam with an acrylic primer. Place a piece of drywall fiber mesh over the caulk, overlapping the mesh fiber seams. Paint another coat of primer over the mesh to hold it in place and let it dry before proceeding.

    • 4

Apply a 1/16-inch layer of the base color FlexRock on the surface with a trowel in a smooth application. Spread a thin coating of a highlight FlexRock color over the top of the wet base application. Create a mottled appearance by adding more highlight color to some areas, using caution to not over mix the highlights with the base application.

    • 5

Create color texture by skimming the smoother tool over the top of the surface to create mini-peaks in the FlexRock. Move and spread the color in a desired pattern on the countertop as you smooth the surface with the smoothing tool. Mist the surface of the FlexRock lightly with water if you need it to be more pliable as you are smoothing the color.

    • 6

Apply FlexRock on the edges of the counter top with a plastering hawk to limit spilling. Start at the bottom of the edge and pull the FlexRock medium in an upward motion to apply.

    • 7

Dry the FlexRock for 24 to 48 hours, or until completely dried. Apply an acrylic sealer over all surfaces of the FlexRock to seal and protect it from stains.
