Top Hanging Pocket Door Roller Repair

A pocket door moves along a track above it using roller assemblies that are mounted on the top of the door. These roller assemblies may become damaged or loose over time, causing the door to move sluggishly in the track or to fall off the track regularly. You must remove the door from the track, enabling you to inspect and possibly replace the rollers. Purchasing higher-quality doors with a guarantee on the wheels and track can help minimize this problem in the future.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut through the paint at the seams between the stop pieces and the door jamb. Drive a pry bar between the stops and the jamb at several points, pushing the bar toward the outside of the door frame to remove the stops.

    • 2

Pull the door out of its cavity in the wall. Swing the bottom of the door out of the door’s opening, then push up on the door to remove the rollers from the track.

    • 3

Inspect the rollers, looking for any signs of damage. Turn the mounting screws that hold the rollers to the top of the door clockwise, tightening them.

    • 4

Remove the rollers, if they are damaged, by turning their mounting screws counterclockwise. Anchor replacement rollers in the same positions on the top of the door, using the screws that come with the rollers.

    • 5

Spray penetrating lubricant into the rollers and then spin the wheels with your fingers, working the lubricant around in the roller assembly. Insert the top of the door into the doorway, angling the rollers into the track. Swing the bottom of the door into the doorway, then roll the door back into the wall. Drive the stop pieces’ nails back into the trim, using a hammer, at the same locations that the stops sat at before.
