Do They Make a Repair Kit for IKEA Kitchens?

IKEA is a “big box” store that sells primarily European-designed and produced housewares. The store sells a comprehensive range of furniture and equipment for kitchens, including that all-important sink. It also stocks faucets, cabinets, counter tops, appliances, cookware, table service items, crockery and silverware. It does not, however, sell a dedicated kitchen repair kit. That said, there are a number of remedies when an IKEA product fails.
  1. Missing Components

    • IKEA stores sell only closed boxes of unassembled furniture. The stores do not stock spare parts or any individual components, and for this reason IKEA’s website notes that, “We cannot give spare parts for As-is merchandise.” “As-is” in this context means merchandise reported to the store as having a component missing from the box. The website also notes that, although some stores do have a hardware sales area, “If the pieces are not originally sold separately from the product, the pieces cannot be purchased separately in the future.”

    Exchanges

    • The store recommends that if a product was purchased from a store within 90 days and can be accompanied by the original sales receipt, it should be returned in its disassembled state and with its packaging for a complete exchange. This is a less-than-cheering resolution for customers who have almost completely assembled a purchase before noticing the absence of a late-stage component; before beginning assembly, always check your purchase against the list of components enclosed in every box.

    Warranty Repairs

    • All IKEA products are covered by the company’s general warranty conditions, which are stipulated each year in the catalog. Products are covered by the general warranty for a set period of years, determined by the nature of the product. If -- after examining the product in need of repair -- the company determines it has a responsibility, it may either carry out the repair at no cost to the customer or replace the item with an identical or similar product. The warranty has numerous exclusion clauses, including “Products that have been stored or assembled incorrectly, used inappropriately, abused, misused, altered, or cleaned with wrong cleaning methods or wrong cleaning products … normal wear and tear, cuts or scratches, or damage caused by impacts or accidents … (and) products (that) have been placed outdoors or in a humid environment.”

    Your Own Repair Kit

    • It is seldom necessary to have a toolkit to work on any IKEA product; all purchases have all the necessary assembly and adjustment tools in the original packaging. Keep the tools in case you ever need to make any repairs. That said, assembling your own repair kit in an IKEA store can be as much fun as making the original purchase; the hardware section has many knickknacks that cry out to be purchased.
