Bracket Lighting

Lighting fixtures are one of the most common electronic devices in modern homes and businesses. They come in a variety of styles and designs. While most lights mount from brackets, only certain types are commonly referred to as bracket lighting. These types of lights are most suitable for certain locations and conditions.
  1. Brackets

    • Brackets are the part of light fixtures that help stabilize the rest of the light and hold it in place. Most styles of lights contain some type of bracket. Overhead light brackets may be hidden beneath the surface of the ceiling or under the exposed portion of the light fixture. The brackets mount to the joists or frames, holding the light fixture firmly in place. Long brackets allow variable placement of track lighting, while square and round brackets hold individual fixtures in permanent locations.

    Bracket Lighting

    • Although most types of lights have brackets, bracket lighting generally refers to lighting fixtures with exposed brackets that contain elongated tube bulbs, such as fluorescent tubes. The bracket fixture is the most obvious part of these types of lights, on which a clear or translucent piece of plastic sheeting covers the recessed tube bulb.

    Locations

    • Below cabinets and above countertops are the most common locations for bracket lighting, as well as over desks and garage work areas. A useful type of lighting in kitchens, bracket lights placed beneath the upper kitchen cupboards provide a direct source of light on cutting boards, sinks and other culinary work areas.

    Installation

    • The specific method for installing bracket lighting may vary, depending on the particular type and brand of lighting purchased. The basic method involves hardwiring the fixture to a light switch. Since these light fixtures require hardwiring, it is important to consult a licensed electrician, especially if you lack experience in this area of home repair. Depending on the number of bracket lights you install, you can put several lights on one switch or place them on separate switches. Mount the bracket to the bottom of the cabinet with the included screws, placing it far enough to the back that it does not show from the front. Insert the bulb, and replace the plastic cover. Always dispose of fluorescent bulbs in compliance with your local regulations.
