How to Enlarge a Cooktop Cutout

A cooktop that sinks or slides into an island or counter is an efficient use of cooking space. When replacing a cooktop, it is important that you measure the cooktop and make the opening the right size. If your cooktop opening needs to be smaller to hold up the new cooktop, trim pieces can be made to help. However, if the space needs to be larger, you will need to cut the opening with a saw.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the perimeter of the cooktop for placement in your counter with a tape measure. Remember that most cooktops need to overlap the counter edge by at least 1/2 inch.

    • 2

Remove any tiles that are at the edge because it is difficult to cut them without cracking or chipping them. It is best to replace them after the cut is made.

    • 3

Mark with a piece of chalk or pencil where the cut needs to be made. Use a straightedge if you need a guide for the whole cut.

    • 4

Look over the edges of the countertop where the cut is to be made and check for any protrusions, pipes, outlets or other impediments. Remove anything in your way and disconnect the power to the area before proceeding. It is generally safer to run an electrical cord from another room for your saw and turn off the power to the kitchen.

    • 5

Use a router, skill saw or jigsaw to cut the opening the required amount. Hold the saw steady and make a firm cut along your guideline.

    • 6

Sand the edge of the cooktop with a coarse-grit sandpaper when you are finished cutting.

    • 7

Install any trim that goes with your cooktop according to the instructions with the cooktop. The trim will provide you with neat, trim corners if you are concerned about your cut.
