How to Troubleshoot a NuTone Intercom UNA-4406 System

Handy equipment such as an intercom makes connecting with others safer and more convenient. Intercom companies like NuTone provide services ranging from simple two-piece units to more complicated multiple box systems for businesses. If you've experienced operational issues with your NuTone system, and the warranty has expired, you may be able to diagnose and fix the problem yourself. Basic issues like low volume or a blank display are indicators that a connection may be loose or installed incorrectly. If your intercom emits a burning smell, disconnect the unit and call a service provider immediately.

Instructions

  1. No Power

    • 1

Look at the intercom's display panel for a digital message or a power signal. Turn up the radio volume to verify that the unit is operational.

    • 2

Check the plug on the intercom and push the plug into the wall securely. Verify that the electrical plug has enough power for operating the intercom.

    • 3

Examine the breaker box to make sure the breaker has not been flipped. Flip the breaker back if it is in the "off" switch.

    Squealing Intercom

    • 4

Turn up the volume on the intercom. Turn down the intercom if it squeals or squeaks. Examine the intercom for loose wires or cords.

    • 5

Move speakers that are mounted too close together. Squealing may occur if speakers are positioned towards one another.

    • 6

Listen to the intercom for static noise. Unplug the intercom and remove the plate from the unit. Look at the ground wire. The wire should be well connected and not loose.
