How to Replace a Keyhole Door Knob

A door knob assembly with the keyhold built into the knob attaches from the inside of the door. The lock faces outward on the exterior door, where there is no mounting hardware. Replacing the door knob assembly with another keyed lock set takes less than an hour by using only a screwdriver.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door and leave it ajar while replacing the door knob hardware.

    • 2

Take out the two screws holding the plate over the latch on the edge of the door, using a screwdriver.

    • 3

Remove the screws in the round plate surrounding the inside door knob.

    • 4

Pull the keyhole knob from the front of the door while holding the knob on the opposite side of the door to separate the two halves of the assembly.

    • 5

Push the door latch assembly out of the door edge by pressing on the back of the latch inside the hole for the door knobs.

    • 6

Insert the latch assembly for the new doorknob set into the opening in the edge of the door. Place the cover plate over the latch and secure with two screws.

    • 7

Insert the knob assembly with the keyhole into the opening on the exterior side of the door.

    • 8

Line up the door knob mounting holes for the interior knob with the exterior knob and push into the door hole until the two parts join.

    • 9

Test the latch operation by turning and releasing the inside knob to verify the latch retracts and extends.

    • 10

Fasten the two halves of the doorknob assembly together with screws through the holes in the round plate on the interior side of the door. Tighten with the screwdriver.
