How to Fix a Suspended Sliding Closet Door

A suspended sliding closet door hangs from an overhead track by two grooved wheels mounted to the top of the door on brackets. A bracket in the floor provides stability as the door slides back and forth. The simple design of a sliding closet door means there are not too many things that can go wrong. If the doors needs repair, buy replacement parts from a hardware store and use basic tools to fix them.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the closet doors one at a time to disengage the grooved wheels at the top from the overhead track. Tilt each door forward to remove from the closet door frame.

    • 2

Spin the wheels on the brackets at the top of each door. If a wheel is broken or chipped, it will not roll properly on the track.

    • 3

Unscrew and remove the wheel brackets if a wheel is broken. Take the part with you to a hardware store for a matching replacement.

    • 4

Attach the new bracket wheel to the door using screws and a screwdriver.

    • 5

Repair minor bends and dents in the overhead track with a pair of pliers to straighten the track rails.

    • 6

Remove a damaged or broken track by extracting the screws from the center of the track where it is attached to the top of the door frame. Match the track with a replacement from a hardware store.

    • 7

Install a new track using the screws supplied with the part or reuse the screws removed in Step 6.

    • 8

Tighten the screws in the support bracket on the floor. The bracket can become loose over time, causing the doors to wobble. Remove the screws in a broken floor bracket to take out the part and replace it with a new bracket.

    • 9

Apply a short burst of spray lubricant to the wheels on each door to help them spin smoothly on the tracks.

    • 10

Suspend each door from the overhead track, starting with the inner closet door.
