DIY Basement Noise Reduction

Noise from a basement can trickle upstairs, and noise from people walking in the house is often heard down in the basement. It's possible to soundproof basements, and some homeowners hire contractors to install soundproof installation between the drywall. Rather than spend money to soundproof and reduce noise, consider a few do-it-yourself techniques.

Position a large area rug on upstairs floors. Wood and tile surfaces on the top level can create noise in the basement as people walk. Install your own wall-to-wall carpet if you have experience in this area, or lay large area rugs on uncarpeted areas to help absorb sounds.

Seal cracks in the ceiling between your basement and top level. Any opening can increase the noise level in your basement. Buy caulk from an home improvement store, locate openings or cracks in the ceiling and apply caulk to these areas to reduce sounds.

Use acoustic foam to reduce noise and sounds. You can buy these self-adhesive foam blocks from a home improvement store. Determine the square footage of your basement ceiling by measuring the length and width, and then multiplying the length by the width. Buy foam by the square feet. Remove the adhesive backing, climb onto a ladder or chair and affix the foam insulation to your basement ceiling.
