Refurbishing a Bathroom Counter

Refurbish a bathroom counter top with paint for a low-cost project that makes the surface look fresh and clean. Choose a paint roller to apply the primer and enamel, instead of a paint brush, to get an even application with a smooth and professional appearance. Refinishing a bathroom counter takes patience, as the paint and sealer need to dry adequately between each application. Use the time between each application to prepare for the next step, and watch the transformation occur.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure a drop cloth or plastic sheet around the edges of the counter to protect the walls, sink and floor from paint spills.

    • 2

Wash the counter top with soap and water, and wipe it dry with a clean towel. Avoid using the counter top for two to four hours, allowing it to dry completely.

    • 3

Rough the counter with sandpaper to lightly scratch the surface to help the paint stick. Wipe the surface with a damp towel to remove all the dust residue. Wait for the counter to dry for about two hours before proceeding.

    • 4

Apply a layer of primer to the counter surface with a roller; allow it to dry for about six hours. Apply a second layer of primer and let it dry overnight before proceeding.

    • 5

Apply a layer of satin enamel on top of the primer with a roller in the color you want for the counter. Allow the enamel to dry for about six hours, and use a roller to put on a second application. Let the enamel dry for about two days to guarantee it dries completely.

    • 6

Seal the enamel paint by applying a clear gloss varnish. Use even strokes with the paintbrush to keep the varnish smooth and without bubbles. Avoid placing items on the counter for a minimum of four days to let the varnish harden.
