Reversing Kohler Doorknob Locks

Kohler is a manufacturer of both interior and exterior doorknobs that contain a lock in the knob itself to reduce the need for installing a secondary deadbolt into the door. The locking mechanism for the knob consists of a central latch, with the doorknob providing a cylindrical locking control that contains either a keyed lock for external knobs or a safety slotted lock for internal doors. Reversing the doorknob allows you to change the side of the door that the lock is operated from, and it is a simple process of removing the knob and then reversing its position.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door so that you can freely access both sides of the doorknob installation.

    • 2

Remove the two screws from the plate at the base of the doorknob with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 3

Pull the doorknobs from both sides of the door.

    • 4

Swap the doorknobs to the other side of the door for reinstallation.

    • 5

Take the doorknob with the lock, then slide its cylinder unit into the latch in the door hole. The latch has a specific shape on which the knob’s cylinder can fit. Rotate the cylinder within the hole until it aligns with the opening in the latch. Pass it through to the other side of the door.

    • 6

Place the other doorknob onto the cylinder passing through the door. Like the latch within the door, the knob will have an opening in its center shaped to accept the cylinder. Rotate the knob to align the opening with the cylinder, then slip the knob over the cylinder until the plate at the base of the knob rests flush on the door.

    • 7

Rotate the plates of the two knobs until the holes align with the hole in the central latch of the door. Run the two plate screws through the plate of the doorknob containing the mounting holes and through the holes in the central door latch, threading them by hand into the holes on the other doorknob. Once both screws are started, tighten them in place with the Phillips screwdriver, completing the knob reversal.
