How to Fix a Closet Door Fastener

A sticking closet door can leave clothing exposed to household dust and curious pets. Walking into an open door during a midnight trip to the restroom may also provide you with a good opportunity to stub your toe. Wooden door frames shift slightly during changes in temperature, making it necessary to make minor door adjustments. Make fastening a closet door a cinch by making a few adjustments to the lock and door plate. A few minutes of your time and the right tools will fix this problem, keeping the closet neat and in order.

Instructions

    • 1

Rub a dab of lipstick over the door latch. Cover the strike plate, located on the door frame with masking tape. Close the door, then open it. Find the position of the latch by looking at the masking tape. This will help you see where the latch is landing and how it should be moved.

    • 2

Adjust the door upward by removing one of the screws in the upper hinge jamb. Replace the regular door screw with a 3-inch long wood screw. Lower the angle of the door by replacing a screw in the lower hinge jamb. Lowering or raising the door may line up the door with the strike plate.

    • 3

Enlarge the strike plate hole by removing it with a screwdriver. Use a small file and make the hole larger by sanding it. Replace the strike plate and try the door again.

    • 4

Move the strike plate higher, lower or to the left or right to match up the plate with the lock. Close the door to verify that the door stays fastened.
