How to Repair a Porcelain Wood Stove

Wood stoves add a certain charm to a room in addition to being an ideal secondary or main source of heat. Over time, older stoves can begin to lose their finish and will look worn and old. Porcelain wood stoves can chip, or the porcelain can lose its shine as it ages. You can remedy this by giving the stove a fresh coat of paint.

Things You'll Need

  • Drop cloths
  • Sheets of cardboard

Instructions

    • 1

Protect the flooring around the stove with drop cloths and cardboard sheets. Slide the cardboard under the feet of the stove if possible. Otherwise, place drop cloths all around the bottom of the stove.

    • 2

Remove any rough spots by going over the surface lightly with steel wool. If the porcelain is chipped, scratched or worn, these areas will need to be smoothed out.

    • 3

Wipe up all of the sanding dust with a damp cloth. The surface must be completely clean before it can be painted.

    • 4

Spray on one coat of fire-resistant paint in the color of your choice. Hold the can approximately 6 to 8 inches away from the stove and apply a thin coat. Let this dry for at least 12 hours.

    • 5

Apply a second coat if necessary. Inspect the surface of the stove. If you still can see imperfections, apply another coat of paint and let it dry for at least 12 to 24 hours before using the wood stove.
