How to Install a Center Pull Fireplace Damper

Installing a fireplace damper that you can open and close with a center pull is a project that almost any homeowner can do. The damper allows smoke to flow up the smoke chamber when you are burning a fire in the fireplace. Once the fire is completely out, shutting the damper keeps cold air drafts from entering your home via the flue. It also prevents heated air inside the home from escaping, thus preventing higher utility bills.

Instructions

    • 1

Look inside the fireplace with a flashlight to locate the opening at the bottom of the smoke chamber.

    • 2

Stretch the measuring tape across the opening and measure the width and length if the smoke chamber is square. If it is circular, stretch the tape measure across the center to determine the size of the opening. Take these measurements with you to purchase the center pull fireplace damper.

    • 3

Wear protective gloves when installing a center pull fireplace damper. The devices are generally made of sheet metal with sharp edges.

    • 4

Push the damper into place in the smoke chamber opening so it fits snugly.

    • 5

Seal the edges of the damper with a silicone caulking if it is circular in shape.Allow the caulking to dry before using the fireplace. If the damper is square, simply adjust the screws tightly with a screwdriver to prevent it from moving.
