How to Hook Up a Thermostat to a Bryant Furnace

Turn off the power for the Bryant furnace at the main circuit breaker if it is currently plugged in.

Pick a location for the thermostat. This is best located in a central portion of the house or building where the Bryant is installed.

Measure the distance between the thermostat and the furnace with measuring tape. This will tell you the amount of thermostat wire you will need to purchase. Take into account any crawlspace or attic space where you have to run the wire and add this to the measurement.

Remove the electrical panel, usually located on the side of the furnace. Use a pair of wire strippers to remove the last half inch of wire sheathing from three of the wires. Connect one wire to the terminal marked "RH" inside the panel by loosening the connection screw, squeezing the wire in place around it and then tightening the screw again. Repeat this process for the terminal marked "W" and the terminal marked "G". Make a note of the color of the wire connected to each terminal.

String the wire through the attic or crawlspace to the wall where the thermostat will be installed. Drill through the wall header with an electric drill and spade bit. Lower the free end of the wire into the wall space.

Cut a hole in the wall, about 2 or 3 inches on each side, where you plan to install the thermostat. Fish inside the wall for the thermostat wire and pull it out of the hole. Tie a pencil around the thermostat wire to prevent it from falling back into the wall.

Remove the faceplate from the thermostat. Slip the wires through the back of the thermostat and place it on the wall. Mark on the wall through the holes in the back of the thermostat for the mounting screws. Set the thermostat aside. Drill holes in the wall on the marks and insert anchors. Slip the wires back through the thermostat and align it on the wall so the holes in the back of the thermostat line up with the holes on the wall. Secure the thermostat body with screws.

Connect the appropriate colored wires to the "RH", "W" and "G" terminals in the same manner as you connected the wires on the Bryant.

Replace the thermostat cover and restore power to the Bryant.
