How to Tighten a Wood Spiral Staircase

A wooden spiral staircase can add visual appeal to your home and save space. Over time, however, joints can come loose, as with any wooden staircase. Keep your staircase quiet and well-functioning with little more than a screwdriver and wrench. Working with wood does require care, as over-tightening can split it, especially if it's a softer wood.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the bolt that sits on top of the spiral staircase's center column, next to the top landing. Refasten this bolt using an appropriately sized wrench.

    • 2

Tighten the screws on top of the top tread board, which may be located underneath the boards.

    • 3

Tighten the screw attaching the bottom of the baluster to the tread board. Refasten the screw connecting the baluster to the top railing as well.

    • 4

Loosen and refasten the tread's corresponding column bolt attaching it to the center post. Repeat the tightening process for all stairs, tightening the tread, baluster and column bolt for each. Replace any worn screws or bolts with new ones of the same size.
