How to Mirror-Cut Granite

A mirror cut is another term for a bevel cut. The name comes from mirrored glass having a beveled edge, which is a slight angle that gives the piece a more upscale and elegant look. Mirror cutting granite is a difficult task because granite is a temperamental material. If you use the wrong tool, you might break the granite or leave behind a sloppy-looking edge. When making a mirror cut on granite, you must use caution to avoid damaging the granite.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your work station and your tools by laying a plastic tarp on the work surface. Swap the bit in your router with a diamond-bevel bit. Fill a plastic spray bottle with cold water from the tap. The cold water prepares the granite and prevents damage.

Set the granite on your work surface and clamp the granite down. If the granite moves during cutting, you risk cutting too deeply and breaking the surface.

    • 3

Wear goggles and heavy-duty gloves. The goggles protect your eyes from pieces of granite that break off the larger piece and the gloves keep your hands safe from the flying debris.

    • 4

Spray the edges of the granite with water from the spray bottle. Hold the router at an angle against the granite and turn on the power. Carefully move the router across the edge of the granite, adding more water when the granite becomes dry.

Remove the clamps and turn the granite around, giving you access to another edge. Spray the edge with more water and hold the router against the granite. Each time you need to mirror cut another edge, spray with more water and clamp the piece down.
