How to Use a Power Paint Roller

A power paint roller is an great way to paint a room or wall in a short amount of time. You don't have to keep dipping your roller into a pan of paint. Paint gets pumped directly into your roller. Instructions

  1. Get Ready to Paint

    • 1

Prepare the area you want to paint like you would with any painting job. Clean the wall. Make sure it's dry and free of dust.

    • 2

Apply masking or painter's tape to areas you do not want waited. Put a drop cloth on the floor so you don't get paint on it.

    • 3

Paint the corners of the walls and the strip at the top where the wall meets the ceiling. You want to cover at least 3 or 4 inches. You can use a paint brush or small paint roller to do this.

    • 4

Assemble the power paint roller. Attach the roller sleeve to the roller frame.

    • 5

Get your paint out and take the lid off.

    • 6

Plug in the motor. Power paint rollers can vary. A common do-it-yourself type has the motor sit underneath the paint can.

    • 7

Attach the plastic tube to the paint roller. Submerge the other end of the tube in the paint. There will be a lid of some sort that you put on the paint.

    • 8

Take the roller for a test drive. Pull the trigger. The motor should start and you should see paint getting pumped into the tube and up into the roller.

Paint with a Power Paint Roller

    • 9

Stand in front of the wall you want to paint holding the roller and pull the trigger.

    • 10

Press the roller against the wall when you see little droplets of paint seeping out of the roller.

    • 11

Go up and down in straight columns, overlapping the edges. It's best to start from the top of the wall and work your way down. Unless the ceiling is high, you should be able to do the whole wall from top to bottom.

    • 12

Pull the trigger and pump up paint into the roller the whole time you're rolling. Let go of the trigger when you stop rolling.

    • 13

Paint the whole wall, or a section if it's a long wall.

    • 14

Go over the wall a second time with the roller without pulling the trigger. This will even out the paint and clean up drips.

    • 15

      Stop when you're done.

    Clean Up

    • 16

Use your roller to go over the wall without pumping any paint. This will get some excess off of the roller sleeve.

    • 17

Close up the paint and put it away.

    • 18

Clean up the roller sleeve, roller basket and handle like you would after any sort of paint job.

    • 19

Clean out the tube that carries the paint to the roller, getting as much paint as possible out of it.
