How to Spray-Paint Interior Doors of a House

Remove the door from its hinges by tapping the pin up and out of the hinge. Typically there are three hinges and it helps to remove the top, the bottom and then the middle one so the door doesn't swing out before you are ready. Lift the door off and take it outside.

Unscrew the hinge from the door, the doorknob and the faceplate. If there are any hooks or other hardware, unscrew them and set them aside. You do not want to be painting over these things or your door will not look like it was painted properly.

Set the door flat on two supports that will hold it up off the ground so you can paint it. About 3 feet is usually a nice height. Make sure you are in a spot that is somewhat sheltered so you don't have the wind blowing the paint around.

Wash the door with a little all-purpose cleaner to remove greasy spots, especially around the doorknob. Give the door a light sanding so the paint will adhere better. Wipe the door down to remove any dust or grit that may be on the door. Make sure to do both sides and the edges.

Spray the door with the paint by making wide sweeps with the can going past the edges of the door. Keep the first layer very light and allow about 20 minutes between coats. Continue layering until the door has a solod coating. Allow to dry overnight.

Turn the door over and do the same thing as in Step 5. Allow the door to dry overnight and reattach the hardware. Lift the door back into place in the hinges and reattach the pins. Tap them into place with the hammer. Your door is now ready for use.
