How to Paint a Fiberglass Shower Enclosure

At first glance, it may not seem like you can renew your fiberglass shower simply by painting. However, if you clean and prepare the shower correctly, and use the right kind of paint, you can make your shower look almost as good as new. This job is not as quick and easy as painting a wall, and it might be a bit messier due to the kind of paint used. Nevertheless, the average homeowner, with the proper tools, can complete this paint job, without too much of a hassle.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover all surrounding walls and fixtures with plastic or paper, secured with masking tape. Place a drop cloth on the floor of the shower, as well as outside of the shower. This paint is not easy to get off surfaces, and spills or splatters are a given.

    • 2

Scrub down the shower completely. All dirt, soap scum and mildew must be removed before priming and painting the shower. Dry the surfaces well with a towel. Before moving to the next step, don safety glasses and a painter's mask. In addition, open nearby windows for ventilation.

    • 3

Lightly sand the finish with fine-grained sand paper. Don't sand it too hard (and don't use a power sander). The purpose is not to remove the finish, but to simply create a better surface for which the primer to stick.

    • 4

Open the primer, and pour into roller pan. Roll the paint roller in the primer, entirely covering the roller's surface. Apply primer evenly over the entire surface to be painted. For edges, use a paint brush.

    • 5

Allow the primer to dry; this may take a while. In the meantime, mix paint, and stir with a paint stirrer.

    • 6

Pour mixed paint into a clean roller pan. Roll a clean foam roller in the paint, until it is completely coated. Start painting at the highest point of the shower. Work your way down the shower enclosure with the grain. After you've finished the first coat and let it dry, you can paint the second coat. Two or three coats may be necessary, followed by a clear coat.
