Remove door knobs and handles with a screwdriver. If you are going to remove the entire door prior to painting (to lay it flat on a sawhorse, for example), remove all other hardware at this time. Otherwise, protect hinges, strike plates and other hardware with masking tape or painter's tape.
Protect door windows (if applicable) with painter's tape or masking tape. Wet a sponge in warm, soapy water and clean off all dust and dirt from the door. Rinse the surface with a clean, damp towel and let it dry.
Place a drop cloth below the door to protect your flooring. Lightly sand the surface by hand and wipe the door down with a dust or tack cloth. If you purchased a primed, ready-to-paint Mastercraft steel door, skip to Step 5.
Open the windows to create adequate ventilation. Apply high-quality primer with a paint brush or small, smooth-knapped roller brush.
Paint the first coat of paint on one side of the door. Allow it to cure fully before painting the next coat. While you are waiting for one side to dry, paint the other side of the door.
