About Tile Refinishing Paint

Epoxy paints are the only paints that should be use to refurnished tile. Oil-based and other traditional paints will peel and flake off of most tiles. When using non-toxic epoxy paints, a primer layer must be applied first to act as a bonding agent and sealant to help the paint bond to the tile and seal the grout against mildew and water damage.
  1. Necessary Paint qualities

    • Tiles are painted with a specific type of paint that gives them a glossy look and are smooth to the touch. Since tiles are usually found it kitchens or bathrooms, the paint must make them waterproof as well. It must also seal the grout between the tiles, which is the most vulnerable part, subject to mildew and cracks that can absorb water. When painting tiles, the paint must fill in these cracks, provide adequate protection to the tiles and give the tiles the expected look.

    Oil-based

    • Because of their maintenance needs, there are many types of paint that do not work with tiles. Oil-based paints are water resistant, but they are not waterproof, so they do not form a proper seal. After drying and being used for a short amount of time, oil paints will start to flake under the stress and peel off. When applying tile paint, the tiles must be properly treated and painted with a special paint.

    Epoxy

    • There are specific epoxy paints designed to paint tiles. These paints are used because they are naturally waterproof (not just water resistant) and non-toxic, so the water will not pick up any toxic materials that could be absorbed into the skin. They are also self-leveling, which means they are easier to apply in smooth, even coats and naturally get ride of bubbles. These epoxy paints are usually high-gloss and come in many different colors.

    Preparation

    • No matter what type of epoxy paint you use, the tile must first be prepared by using a primer. This primer is a bonding agent, which helps the paint connect to the surface of the tile and creates the seal that protects the tile from water. This primer is applied with a brush or spray.

    Brush Tools

    • Normal paint brushes are too rough to be used in tile paint. Light brushes, sponge rollers or other gentle tools should be used to apply the epoxy paint. Many of these tools come with tile painting kits. Some types are available in spray cans. A second coat is usually applied, after waiting several hours for the first to dry.
