Interior Wall Color Ideas

Painting a wall is an easy way to add certain qualities to a room such as warmth. Paint may also help change the perception of a room's features. Certain colors may make room ceilings feel less cramped or compliment intricate moldings. Any decision about what paint color to use should be made after a careful consideration of the room's purpose, the overall furnishings in the room and the rooms in the rest of the house.
  1. Whiten It

    • Go for white. White is a very good choice of color for many rooms. The color white is the sum total of all colors. This means white does not clash with other colors. Paint the walls white if the room is filled with furniture and other items such as pictures and books. White walls can serve as a background for the room's contents and let attention be drawn to them. In general avoid using pure whites in a room. A pure white is one that has not been diluted with other colors. Pure white walls can be distractingly bright. Think about the others colors in the room. Use a color already in use to tone down any white used. A bit of brown in a white paint can make it pair well with darker tones. A bit of yellow can make the white seem sunnier.

    Make a Statement

    • Add drama and flair to any room with bold color choices. Brighter colors such as reds, dark greens and purples can make any room seem like the set of stage play. Use such colors judiciously or the effect may become overwhelming. Paint the walls of a dining room red to help stimulate people's appetites. Paint a room full of books dark green to make it feel like a cozy branch of the local library. Take advantage of a small space such as a half bath and indulge your inner actress. Paint the wall plum for an audacious color statement.

    Pastels

    • Use pretty pastels. Pastels are colors such light blue, pink, lavender, mint green that are traditionally associated with the qualities of softness and light. A room painted with pastel colors can feel bigger, calmer, airier and less overcrowded. Paint a little boy's room in baby blue. Make the kitchen seem like a welcoming oasis with light green walls. Delight a little girl by painting the walls of her room a gentle pink.
