How to Choose Color Schemes For House Painting

Let's take a quick look at a few common color schemes for house painting.........

Complimentary Color Scheme - These are colors which are opposite from each other on the color wheel. An example would be red and green. If you go with this type of color scheme, I recommend having one of the colors be the dominant color. Don't paint half the room one color and the other half the second color. It probably won't look right.

Monochromatic Color Scheme - This is pretty common in house painting and easy to achieve. This color scheme uses only one color and then different shades of that same color. An example would be dark green painted on one wall and then lighter shades of green on the other walls.

Adjacent Color Scheme - This uses colors that are directly next to each other on the color wheel. An example would be blue, blue-violet and blue-green. This gives personality and a distinct feel to a room.

Choose colors that blend with things in your home. Think about the color of your window treatments, furniture, carpeting, or flooring. It's good to pick colors that compliment items in your home. You don't want to pick paint colors that won't mesh with items around your house, it might not look right.

It's a good idea to try and match your paint colors with similar tones or shades of colors found in your window treatments. Think about how your paint colors will look next to the trim and molding too.

Observe the amount of daily sunlight in your home. If a room has little or no sunlight coming in, darker paint colors might make the room seem smaller or simply too dark. You don't want the room to look like a cave.

Some paint colors might look strange in rooms that have too much sun or too much artificial light, if they're too bright or too dark. The light will highlight the true color of the paint so keep that in mind.

Take a look at the structure and size of the walls in your house. If you were deciding to paint a large wall with the color red, it might look a little overwhelming after you paint it, having a gigantic red wall. It's a good idea to get paint samples from the store and paint a little on the wall first to see the true color. Sometimes color chips from the store are faded and they can be misleading.

Pick out your colors. Choose colors that promote a mood or emotion. Red is hot and vibrant and it would be suitable for a social area like a living room. Blue is relaxing and calm so it would be nice in a bedroom. Green or tan colors might be good for a family room or den. It's best to paint ceilings white to make them appear open and bright.

Paint an accent wall. You can use an accent wall to create a focal point in a room. If you were painting a room with a complimentary color scheme using red and green, with green being the dominant color, you'd paint your accent wall in red.

Accent walls look best with only one accent wall per room. Having more than one distorts the color scheme and it might make the room look too busy.

Paint your baseboard, trim , doors and molding white. No matter what colors you paint on your walls, the white color will really highlight your trim, as well as your new wall paint.
