How to Remove Paint From a Cinder Block Basement

Removing paint from a cinder block basement does not necessarily require a professional, but it will take some time and effort if you want to do it yourself. You should always remember to provide adequate ventilation, to avoid getting chemicals into your eyes or on your skin, and to keep children and pets out of the area until the project is finished. You may be able to completely remove the paint on your cinder block basement walls with one round, but if not, simply repeat the steps listed as needed.

Things You'll Need

  • Thick gel paint remover, preferably industrial strength
  • Wide paintbrush or paint stirrer
  • Paint scraper
  • Face mask
  • Rubber gloves (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Put on the face mask and gloves, if desired. Ensure there is adequate ventilation in the room, through windows and doors and use fans.

    • 2

Spread the gel paint remover over the cinder block. Allow this to sit for at least 20 minutes, or the length of time specified by the manufacturer.

    • 3

Use the paint scraper to scrape away the gel and the layer of old paint beneath.

    • 4

Follow this procedure until all the paint is removed. If desired, use a bucket of hot, soapy water to remove any last bits of paint and clean the walls before re-painting.
