How to Paint Window Ledges

Window ledges are subject to much wear and tear. People stand on them, put plant pots on them, and condensation pools on ledges and sun beats down on the paint. This leads to damage that needs occasional maintenance. Paint does not last forever and window ledges can need repainting every three years or so.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash any grease and dirt off the window ledge with hot soapy water and a sponge. Use a solution of one part bleach and three parts water if mildew is present on the window ledge. Wear rubber gloves when using bleach. If mildew is not killed before painting, it will bleed through the paint.

    • 2

Scrap off paint chips and blisters with a metal scraper. Sand the window ledge to scuff up and smooth the old paint so the new coat will adhere to the ledge. This also blends in the scraped areas and removes the sheen from any glossy paint. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the window ledge to remove the paint dust.

    • 3

Fill in any holes or cracks in the window ledge with wood putty. Use a putty knife to cover the flaws in the wood and level the putty. Smooth the putty with your finger to get a nice finish. Let any repair work dry.

    • 4

Mask off the window ledge with blue painter's masking tape. Position the tape as close to the edge as possible. Tape off the frame and the wall so no paint will touch unintended surfaces. Apply the masking tape to create a tight seal.

    • 5

Apply two to three coats of the paint to the window ledge with an angled foam brush. These brushes are inexpensive and washable. The chiseled end lets you get right up in the corners without painting the window shut. Remove the masking tape as soon as the last coat of paint starts to dry. Allow the window to dry completely before touching it.
