How to Mix Paint With Drywall Compound Powder

Make sure the underlying wall is in fairly good shape, clean and primed so the texture paint will adhere and dry to a uniform finish. Caulk or spackle larger cracks, dents and holes. Texture paint will fill very thin cracks and nail holes, but because it shrinks as it dries, it won't fill in larger ones.

Pour enough paint into a 5-gallon bucket to complete your project. Adding drywall compound powder to the paint will reduce the coverage, so expect to get between 200 to 300 square feet per gallon.

Slowly add the drywall compound powder until you have a workable consistency. Use a large paint stir-stick, a drywall masher or mixer attachment on a drill to blend it thoroughly. If you plan to apply it like texture with a putty knife, do not add water but aim for a heavy, creamy texture.

Add water for application with a roller or brush. To extend working time, add some latex paint conditioner with the water. Stir until it has the consistency of thick soup.

Apply texture paint by brushing the edges of the wall first, and using a heavy nap (at least 1/2 inch) roller to cover the wall.

Use a putty knife, sponge or any other tool you like to apply the mixture-like texture. Be creative and practice first on a scrap of drywall or cardboard to come up with a texture you like.

Smooth it down with a damp sponge or rag to knock off sharp or high edges once it's dry for a softer look.

Apply 1 or 2 coats of paint over the surface if you need it to be washable. Seal it with clear acrylic sealer to preserve the faded, mottled look of the texture paint if you like that effect.
