Clean the entire face of the brick wall with a mild soap and water to remove any soot or loose dirt present on the surface of the rock. Allow the brick approximately 2 to 4 hours to completely dry.
Place caulk into any cracks or splits in the brick wall. Put the caulk into a caulk gun, and pull the trigger on the gun to release the caulk from the holster. Use your finger or any flat device to smooth out the caulk after applying it to give it an aesthetically appealing finish.
Apply a coat of 100 percent acrylic primer to the brick wall by loading paint into your paint roller and rolling the paint onto the brick in a slow and even manner. Allow the primer approximately 1 hour to dry completely. Work from the top down. Start closest to the ceiling and work your way down the wall. Use a brush to fill in any small areas you can't reach with the roller.
Apply a coat of acrylic paint to the brick wall by following the same steps used for applying the primer in step 3. The amount of paint needed to cover your wall will vary depending on the surface area you are painting. The general rule is to estimate approximately 250 square feet per gallon. If, after the first coat of paint, you can still see red coming through the paint, apply a second coat of paint using the same steps.
