The Best Way to Paint Laminate Countertops

Applying paint and acrylic sealer to a laminate countertop is a low-cost refurbishment method that increases the value of the room. Painting allows you to keep the counter intact while hiding scratches and worn areas on the laminate.
  1. Preparation

    • Wash the countertop surface with water and mild dish soap to remove dirt before painting. Wipe the surface with a towel and let the countertop dry for several hours. Apply painter's tape around the counter edges next to walls to prevent damage.

    Procedure

    • Sand the counter surface with 150-grit sandpaper, wipe all dust from the surface with a moist towel and let the counter dry. Apply two coats of a laminate flash bond primer to the surface and let it dry for a minimum of four hours after each application. Apply two coats of a semi-gloss paint and let it dry for a minimum of 24 hours after each application. Seal the paint with a clear acrylic.

    Considerations

    • Add a faux texture to the countertop surface before sealing by applying two contrasting colors over the base color. Using a crumpled piece of paper or sponge creates a marbled look. Test the faux painting application on a piece of wood before applying it to the counter surface.
