How to Remove Paint From Interior Woodwork

Layers upon layers of paint often are found on the interior woodwork in older homes. At some point, then the woodwork starts to look caked with paint. The old paint has to be removed so you can start over with a fresh new coat of paint. You can choose from a variety of options when removing the old paint: chemical strippers, sanding or with a scraper. Chemical paint strippers are noxious and hazardous to the environment. Paint scrapers and sanding remove the layers of old paint and will help you avoid the noxious fumes of chemical methods.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the blade of a paint scraper so you can see it well in good lighting. Sharpen the blade of the scraper with a 10-inch mill bastard file. Sharpen the blade to make scraping easier.

    • 2

Set the scraper blade on the wood and pull toward you so that the paint comes off of the wood in long ribbons. Continue removing paint until the scraper begins to be less effective.

    • 3

Sharpen the blade of the paint scraper with the file. Continue to remove paint, sharpening as soon as the scraper becomes dull.

    • 4

Sand the woodwork with medium grit sandpaper. Sand along the grain of the wood until you remove all traces of old paint.

    • 5

Sand the woodwork with fine grit sandpaper until it is smooth and soft under your bare hands.
